SCL Gender Neutral Restrooms
The South Customer Service Center is Seattle City Light’s first gender-neutral restroom facility and is meant to serve as a prototype for their future public restrooms.
In 2020 SAGE researched state goals and regulations intended to guide agencies in providing safe facilities for all. The project resulted in converting non-compliant ADA men’s and women’s rooms to an ADA-compliant, gender-neutral open plan design with a bank of individual toilet stalls and shared hand-washing station. This restroom works well for people of all gender identities. Every design decision was carefully reviewed for how to best serve all users in one multi-user restroom.
LOW MAINTENANCE / DURABLE FINISHES
The floor is concrete epoxy, a very long-lasting finish. With this size of room it requires no joints where dirt would collect. The wet walls are finished with large 12” x 24” tight-joint porcelain tiles. The plumbing fixtures, soap, and paper towel dispensers are all no-touch devices in response to Covid.
